1% for the Planet is a network of 1,100+ member companies that has given $100 million to various environmental causes over the last decade. The organization’s Managing Director, Melody Badgett, explains that the model is very simple and effective: A member organization commits to giving 1% of its top-line sales every year to the cause of its choice. 1% for the Planet certifies each of these 1% sales, but also collects the stories behind the brands and why they chose to donate to the cause.
“Less than 2% of all giving goes to the environment, and less than 4% comes from companies,” Badgett reveals. “That’s an enormous neon light. If you do philanthropy well, it can be a very rich and meaningful story that can add depth and dimension to your brand — customers really support companies that care about something more.”
