About

Maxwell Technologies provides energy-storage and power-delivery solutions using ultracapacitor technology, a battery-like, quick-charging electrostatic energy source. Michael Sund explains how the ultracapacitors’ sustained energy output using less power has been put to use in hybrid transit buses, helping to reduce fossil fuel consumption by capturing energy that would otherwise be wasted. “We’re talking about saving fuel by turning off the internal combustion engine when idling, such as at a red light or stop sign,” Sund says. “In the auto industry, the first application for ultracapacitors was in providing cranking power to continuously restart a vehicle and allow it to save fuel and reduce emissions.”
